Refinishing an antique vanity.
We will show you step by step how to refinish furniture!
This is a "not so cute" antique vanity that we are refinishing. It looks like it has definitely seen better days.
We will guide you step by step through the process of refinishing it!
Here is what it looks like today.....

The plan is to sand and stain the top Dark Walnut, then paint the mirror, stool and bottom of
the vanity a teal color. It's by Behr and its : S-H- 500 REALM

We are going to prep the vanity by removing the hardware and sanding down the main part and mirror.(not the top part yet) I will be using a disc sander with 150 grit sandpaper and sanding block with 150 grit sandpaper wrapped around the block.
Make sure you remove the glass from the mirror before you sand it.
We decided to add a cute wood appliqué to the front. You can buy these from Home Depot.
To add this you are going add glue to the back of the appliqué, apply it to the front of the vanity and use a clamp
to hold it in place. Once it is in place take some small nails and nail it.
Make sure you nail it in a inconspicuous place, then set the nails with a nail setter so that they are hidden.
Now stain the applique to match the wood. We are using Dark Walnut by Minwax.

Wipe down all dust from the furniture to get it ready for paint. Sometimes (a lot of times) things don't go as planned and you have to improvise.
We were going to do this the color REALM by Behr but we didn't have enough so we added Sweet Rhapsody (Tiffany blue color) by Behr. We are painting with our sprayer.
If you don't have a paint sprayer them you can use a foam cabinet roller.
Make sure you apply the paint in thin even coats.
I love the custom color we created! Here she is with her first coat of paint.

Here she is with her 2nd coat of paint, she looks like she has more confidence already! LOL
Now it’s time to sand the top. We used the disc sander to sand the top down to the natural wood.
When you are done take a tack cloth and get all the dust off.
Next we stained the top with Dark walnut using a foam brush.
Apply it in the direction of the wood grain. We let it sit for about 5 minutes.

Using a lint free cloth wipe the stain off in the direction of the wood grain. Let dry.
You can repeat the stain application until the desired color is achieved.

After the stain is dry you are going to apply polyurethane using a foam brush.
Make sure you apply it with the grain of the wood.
After it’s dry you will begin the distressing process. Take your sanding block and wrap 150grit sandpaper around it. You are going to use this to sand the sides and large areas. Take the sandpaper off the block and fold it to get in the details by hand.

After it is distressed the way you like it you are going to seal it with Polyacrylic.
We liked the original antique hardware that came with this set. We wanted to paint it the same color as the vanity so we used 150 grit to ruff it up and then sprayed it at the same time as the vanity. After it was dry we distressed it and added a clear coat spray that will protect it.
We recovered the stool with new fabric. I will try to post the YouTube video we made on how to do this soon.
