Old sewing machine cabinet transformation

This is such a cute sewing machine that we are refinishing for our friends Mother. It is so sweet. She wants it painted black and distressed with a dark laquered top.

It was sanded with a 150 grit sanding block lightly because the wood was already porous that there wasn't a lot of shiny surface area to sand off.

It was sprayed with 2 coats of flat black acrylic paint

I unscrewed the top wood off and set them aside. I am getting ready to distress the main area and seal it with a satin polyurathane. Once that is dried completely, I will take all the top wood pieces and using a 150 grit sander, I will sand the tops to the raw wood in preperation for stain.

To distress I used a 220 grit sanding block around all the edges and corners. Don't be afraid to sand the whole fronts, it is cute when it picks up the little imperfections in the pieces and adds character. Once you have distressed, It will look a little grey until you wipe it down and seal it, then it is black again :)

You can spray the original hardware in the color of paint if you like. I did on this piece. 9 out of 10 times we keep the original hardware and distress it. The old knobs are my favorite! Here is a picture of it just painted.

Take an old sanding block or any sand paper and rub it all over the hardware to take off pieces of paint and make it look worn again.

see how the original color pops through?

cute! You can spray it with the same polyurathane that you spray the entire piece with.
She is ready for a new top now! I will update you soon on that progress!

The trick with sanding and restaining the tops completely is that you do not want ANY old shine or old stain on the surface. I first started with a 150 grit and it just wasn't getting the old stain off so I switched to a 60 grit. The lower the grit the courser it is and the more it can gouge the wood so always start with a higher grit and see if it comes off. Then go down in numbers.
The left side of the picture was sanded with an electric sander with a 150 grit pad on it. The shine was off but the stain was still there. I then switched to a 60 grit and you can see a big difference! Once it is down to the raw wood. you want to take a 220 grit sanding disc lightly to polish the wood and make it nice and smooth for stain. Take the time here. You can wipe your piece down and get an idea where the stain still is. Sometimes with all the dust it is decieving and you think your done. Make sure you are to the raw wood or your stain will not be even.

Once the wood was smooth, I wipe everything down. You do not want any dust on the surface. I then used MinWax Dark Walnut stain on a rag and wiped the surface in the grain of the wood. I let it sit overnight then wiped the surface with the stain a second time to darken it up a bit.
Tomorrow she will get her Polycrylic top coat and she will be ready to go home! I'll be back tomorrow!
